Atrophic gastritis based on bloodwork but b12 is *too* high at 1077 - what is going on? AG usually causes pernicious anemia requiring b12 injections.

  • It's a test looking for signs of bacterial infection in a fluid swab, likely taken from your nose. It's 100% normal for them to run a number of tests on your nasal fluid, even (and perhaps especially) if a cranial CSF leak is suspected. It's likely that they were indeed also running another Beta-2 Transferrin test, but results from that test usually take much longer to come in that most other tests.

  • what a great response, thank you. i forgot to ask this before, but is this one test, or is it four separate tests on the one sample (I was leaking a lot and it was a large sample)

  • Your mouth is absolutely crammed with bugs. If they swabbed your mouth/throat/nose they expect to see them. This is not a sterile site. They shouldn't have swabbed. I bet whoever plated it didn't see that it was from the mouth/nose before they set it up, because it was ordered as a body fluid (normally sterile)

  • yes, ok. i see. appreciate the replies, all!

  • They all are talking about the same thing. You've worked your way up.in modalities. The final one MRI is the golden ticket there. They were actually able to determine what the tumor on the nerve was. The US visualized it. The CTA determined it was not vascular but a nerve. Then the MRI told you it was a cyst. This issue here is they ran you through the ringer. You should if just had an MRI and you could of skipped all the rest and not had your head spinning. But they do all talk about the same anomaly but in the terms of how it is visualized or can be in those modalities.

  • Sounds like your referrers put pretty unhelpful clinical details on your referrals. Some information about the previous findings would have helped to guide the reports for the subsequent scans.

  • so I am with a newish PCP, and I live in an area with like few actual people who believe in using electronic health record or including relevant or recent information about me in outbound referrals who are ON BOARD with this "information about previous findings" idea...

  • Thank you. I did 23andme several years ago and I thought it told me my chances of MTHFR mutation were lower than the rest of the population or something like that. But I don’t think it actually ran the test to determine if I have it.

  • well, if there's one thing I'm NOT, it's a doctor. of anything. But I do get results like B12 over 5000 lol and I have a compound heterozygous MTHFR gene showing up so ya know.... I got that. And have been dxd pernicious anemia - but that's an odd dx, seems like they said you can EITHER have that OR a B deficiency - I had both at times. I have so many similar symptoms so your post rang a bell. GOod luck :)

  • Thank you. I have an endoscopy scheduled for tomorrow so hopefully I’ll get more answers with the B12. I also tested positive for ANA antibody which might explain the atrophic gastritis.

  • Hmm I think I just learned something, I've had a positive ANA, had some testing and was dxd gastroparesis. However they didn't have my MTHFR or anemia on file. Good luck on your Endoscopy. I cancelled mine but wondering what I missed out on.
